“In March of 2020 I relocated from Sydney to Melbourne. I began painting this series as winter set in, as the number of Covid-19 cases in Melbourne began to climb and a longer, more restrictive lockdown was imposed. Plein-air and landscape painting had become unviable. During my one hour of permitted daily exercise I would collect the flowers from around the neighbourhood. Artists often work in isolation, so I was grateful for the familiarity of my studio routine but more so for the subject matter. The luminescence and structural beauty of the magnolia flower provided a focus to counter the sense of dread and uncertainty. The title The Lions in Winter is a tribute to the magnolia’s fierce beauty” ~ Penelope Metcalf.
