Emily Gordon is a highly talented artist who has made a name for herself with her limited-release cityscapes that offer a unique glimpse into the historic surroundings of Sydney. Hailing from Oakland, California, Gordon relocated to Australia in 2005 and now divides her time between downtown Sydney and Gunning NSW. Her work is characterised by an inspired interplay of rhythm, light, and pattern that elevates everyday moments and enables viewers to share in her personal visual narrative.
‘Emily in Glebe’ is her latest series, following three sell-out solo shows in 2021 and 2022. Her work has earned her recognition as a finalist in the 2021 National Emerging Art Prize, as well as a previous Mosman Art Prize finalist, and is represented by Michael Reid Northern Beaches. This series is a celebration of post-lockdown Sydney on Wangal and Gadigal land, as Emily meanders through sun-soaked streets and jumbled back alleys, capturing the joys of urban living with her singular observations.
The paintings in ‘Emily in Glebe’ were developed from a series of inquiries undertaken during Emily’s “Glebe Residency” in late 2022. This process allowed her to unearth the quiet gems of the inner-city enclave, inspiring her new works to burst with light, colour, and rhythm, infused with the freshness of exploration and the joys of discovery. Emily’s latest series is a testament to her exceptional artistic skills and a must-see for any admirer of contemporary art.
