Ella Holme is a visual artist based in Perth, WA.
Creating and drawing is innate in Ella, attending her first still life class at the age of 6. Ella won several art awards throughout highschool and after finishing, found work in freelance graphic design, while undertaking fine art studies at Curtin University in Perth.
She is particularly passionate about the serendipitous processes of Alla prima oil painting. Often relying on loose brushwork, discordant colours and cropped compositions she attempts to represent emotion as well as domestic objects like food and vessels. “This new ‘Beach’ series however, is quite different to my still lifes, they have no black paint, I wasn’t interested in muting colours with a umber or black, but wanted ice-cream pastels. I used a bit of Paynes grey and a transparent oxide mixed together for shadows.”
“I return to studying the beach again and again. I like the soft pastels and light colour values at midday, endeavouring to capture the vast sun and sea we have. I like people’s relationship to the beach; the playfulness at the beach, sunbathing and the feeling of being on holiday. I live on the coast so it makes up my landscape and culture. “
