Kirsten Hocking

Kirsten Hocking is a West Australian artist based in Perth (Boorloo), working primarily in oil painting across the genres of still life and landscape. Her layered, figurative style explores themes of connection and disconnection from nature, drawing on a deep reverence for the natural world and a desire to visually honour its complexity and beauty. Kirsten’s work is rooted in close observation, informed by traditional oil techniques, and her use of non-traditional materials such as botanical inks and cyanotype pigments.

Kirsten’s work reflects an ongoing investigation into native West-Australian flora and fauna, seasonal rhythms, and the light that reveals them. Through still life, she considers humanity’s impulse to domesticate nature, while her landscapes search for wildness in urban parklands. At the core of her practice is a commitment to presence, reverence, and learning from the environment she inhabits.

Kirsten exhibits regularly in group shows and has received a number of awards, including the Francesca Nelson Award (PLC, 2023), the People’s Choice Award (Claremont Art Awards, 2016), and the Louise Macfie Prize (Edith Cowan University, 2013).
