Barb Henderson is an artist who lives in Croydon. For over forty years she has produced works in a variety of mediums and styles. Drawings, embroidered silk paintings, decorated eggs, clay work and painting have been exhibited in a number of galleries.
Barb sees her work as a form of meditation. In her observational drawing and painting she intently focuses on what is here, now before her eyes with her mind freed of preconceptions. Her abstract work is similar, but the focus this time is on the work itself as she tries to resolve the issues of form, line and colour that arise.
“It’s the simple beauty of the interaction of shapes and colour that attracts me and I am prompted to reflect on how we all strive to integrate disparate fragments of our past into a unified story.” While it is not necessary for the viewer to know the provenance of the individual elements of a picture, their individual histories inform Barb’s process and add to the sense of challenge that she sets herself whenever she works. All of her work has intensely patterned surfaces, each work has its own identity and tells its own story in its own distinctive voice.
